Institutt for Energiteknikk (http://www.ife.no) established in 1948 is Norway’s national centre for energy technology. Physics Department at IFE is also the national centre for materials research using neutron scattering techniques. IFE has more than 55 years experience on studies of metal hydrides for hydrogen storage. Since 2002 the Physics Department has about 100 publications related to hydrogen storage materials, 2 patents and 1 patent application. IFE is/was involved in 7 projects funded by the Research Council of Norway, a Nordic Centre of Excellence on Hydrogen Storage Materials, 8 projects funded by the European Commission (finished): HYSTORY, STORHY, NESSHY, HYTRAIN, NANOHY, FLYHY, HYCONES and HYSIC (member of steering committees), a NEDO project (from Japan) and very active in the Task 22 of the IEA HIA. Main scientific activities are synthesis and characterisation of light weigh complex hydrides.

In BOR4STORE IFE will focus on materials preparation and characterization (WP1) and on improvement of kinetics and cycling stability (WP2), being also work package leader of WP2.

Key personnel

Prof. Bjørn C. Hauback

Expert in hydrogen storage materials, X-ray and neutron diffraction, crystallography. Principal Scientist New Materials at IFE, Adjunct Professor at University of Oslo and from 2011 Head of Physics Department at IFE. Coordinating energy storage activities at IFE. He has >200 publications and contributed to >400 presentations at conferences. Prof. Hauback is involved in and also leading many national and international projects related to hydrogen storage materials including being Operating Agent for Task 22 (Solid Hydrogen Storage Materials) in IEA HIA.

Dr. Stefano Deledda

Expert in the synthesis and characterization of metastable and nanocrystalline materials processed by non-equilibrium techniques. PhD in Chemistry from the Dresden Technical University (mechanically alloyed Zr-based metallic glasses and glassy composites); Young Researcher in the framework of a European Union Research Training Network on "H-Sorption in MgH2”. At IFE since 2005, his research activities include the synthesis of multicomponent Mg-based alloys and composites by ball milling performed both in inert (Ar) and reactive (H2 or D2) atmosphere, and the study of novel complex hydrides with large hydrogen storage capacity.

Dr. Magnus H. Sørby

Expert in structural characterization with powder X-ray and neutron diffraction. PhD at IFE in 2005 where he used Bragg and diffuse scattering to investigate long- and short range order in hydrides with classical crystallography and Reverse Monte Carlo modelling. Post doc at IFE 2005-2006 and permanent position since 2007. His research addresses synthesis, structure and thermal decomposition of complex hydrides.

Dr. Jiri Muller

Dr. Jiri Muller is special advisor at IFE. He has been involved in more than 15 EU projects at IFE within FP5, 6 and 7 programmes from both technical and administrative point of view.

In particular, he coordinated FP5 project HYSTORY and SP Solid Subproject STORHY which were the early EU projects related to hydrogen storage in solid materials.

Dr. Olena Zavorotynska

Dr. Olena Zavorotynska is an expert in vibrational spectroscopy. She received her PhD from University of Torino working on characterization of materials’ surfaces with spectroscopic techniques and studying adsorption of molecular hydrogen in porous materials. She worked as a postdoc researcher in the framework of the European project FlyHy, in the field of characterization of metal borohydrides and their compounds for hydrogen storage. At IFE she works on characterization and improvement of hydrogen storage properties of metal borohydrides
